A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
