Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
