This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
